Talks underway to introduce mass Covid-19 testing to Notts

Talks are being held to introduce a programme of mass Covid-19 testing in Nottingham, it has emerged.

It is thought that Nottingham and Nottinghamshire will receive 20,000 tests a week to roll out a programme similar to the one underway in Liverpool. The BBC first reported the scheme yesterday evening (November 9) and Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed this morning that Notts will be one of 66 areas to undertake the programme.

Over 23,000 people have been tested in Liverpool since the pilot scheme was launched on Friday lunchtime.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed last night that 600,000 of the fast Covid tests, which can determine whether a person has the virus in under an hour, are to be sent out across the UK.

The news comes the day after a major breakthrough in the fight against the pandemic as Pfizer and its partner BioNTech announed Phase 3 trial results that showed the vaccine they had developed had a 90% chance of immunising people against Covid-19. It is thought that the first jabs could be administered in the UK by Christmas.
