Derby Market Hall to reopen following £35m revamp

Derby City Council has announced the reopening of Derby Market Hall following a £35.1m revamp.

The Grade-II listed building will open its doors to the public on May 24, ushering in a new era for Derby’s independent shopping, dining, and entertainment scene.

The Market Hall will feature a mix of traders, where visitors will be able to enjoy a variety of offerings, from international cuisine to local delicacies.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council and cabinet member for city centre, regeneration, strategy and policy said: “I’m delighted to announce our final wave of traders who will be operating in the Market Hall when it reopens to the public on Saturday, 24 May. The new traders each bring something unique and special to Derby and the historic Market Hall.

“We are bringing together the best of the region’s independent shopping, eating, drinking, and entertainment, and with only a few weeks to go, I’m excited for the reopening and for visitors from across the region and beyond to experience everything that our traders have to offer.”

Among the new traders is Preloved, a non-profit boutique run by YMCA Derbyshire.

The shop will sell second-hand clothing, with all proceeds supporting the charity’s services for young people and local communities.

Another addition is Darley Abbey Wines, which will operate two units at the Market Hall. The Spirit Run, Derby’s first distillery bar, will offer small-batch spirits for visitors to sample.

The international food offerings at the Market Hall will include Arepita, serving Venezuelan and Caribbean-inspired dishes like arepas and empanadas.

Potful of Crumble, a dessert trader, will serve crumble pots and fresh fruit smoothies, with vegan and gluten-free options available.

Tikka Tales will bring authentic Indian Tandoori cuisine, including tandoori tikkas, naan, and slow-cooked curries.

Bethel Kitchen, led by Sandra Sonna, will offer a mix of African and French dishes, from French classics like quiche Lorraine to African favourites such as jollof rice and fried plantain.

Peatfield continued: “The Market Hall will once again be Derby’s beating heart where people choose to come together to shop, eat, and enjoy the buzz of the city. I am certain that it will be a huge success.”
