This week’s Top 10 stories: Air today, gone tomorrow?

Champion Laboratories' Forest Town site

In years to come we’ll look back at these weeks – like we look back at the tumult at the end of the 1960s, mid-70s and early 90s – and wonder how so much news could be packed into such space of time. Truly, these are remarkable times to live through, and just when you think it’s all going to slow down – another slab of portent slams down.

On a regional scale, it’s no different. Whilst Tony Blair was getting the roasting of his life by the Chilcot Report, and the two main political parties lurched from one crisis to the next, things in the East Midlands continued to bubble.

Our best-read story of the week was our exclusive on Champion Laboratories (Europe) of Forest Town, Mansfield which has appointed RSM as administrators putting the future of the company in doubt. Already staff numbers have been brought down from 61 to 38 since RSM was appointed on Tuesday. The future doesn’t look too clever, to say the least.

Second most popular was another exclusive – this time that The Loom bar and restaurant in Nottingham has been forced to close after owners ran out of cash. Is this a sign that this already crowded sector is reaching critical mass? Time will tell.

And now for some good news: in third place was Scientific Laboratory Supplies (SLS), based in Wilford, has merged with French-based Dominique Dutscher (DD) to create a £150m-plus turnover company that will be the largest independent European distributor of laboratory supplies. It was the first of two deals clinched this week by SLS which will propel the firm to the next level.

Enjoy your weekend – who knows what next week will bring?…
