ICC awards Derby World Cup semi-final

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has today announced that Derby has been awarded a coveted last four fixture as part of a package that will include eight games in total, from 26th June to 20th July 2017.

It was also confirmed that Derby will be a TV broadcast venue, offering increased exposure for the city, and will host at least one England Women’s fixture during the competition.

Tickets for the semi-final, which will take place on Thursday 20th July, will go on general sale this Monday 28th November at 10.00am. The first 120 hospitality places will also be on sale from Monday.

Chief executive of Derbyshire County Cricket Club, Simon Storey said: “It’s tremendous news for the city and the wider county that Derby has been awarded the best possible package for next summer’s World Cup, which will include a semi-final match.

“In total, the Club will host eight games and five will be TV games, which will give us the opportunity to showcase the city to a global audience.

“A huge amount of work went into our bid which focused on why Derby is ideally placed to take its spot on the global sporting stage. We’re very grateful for the support we have received from local cricket clubs and to the businesses who backed our bid.

“The unique support we received has helped us demonstrate that the city of Derby is a great place to live, work and will be a great destination for visitors from across the world.

“It’s also an opportunity for us to create a lasting legacy and we hope the opportunity to watch the best players in the world in Derby will inspire more girls and boys to play cricket.”

Derby City Council leader, councillor Ranjit Banwait, said: “It’s great news that Derby has been selected to host eight games, including a coveted semi-final, at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2017.

“Under my leadership, the Council has worked extremely closely with the Cricket Club to help us secure the tournament, and the ICCs decision validates our firm belief that Derby is ideally placed to take its spot on the global sporting stage.

“Not only will the financial benefits be felt by business across the city – with large crowds, most of whom are from abroad, attending each game frequenting our hotels, pubs, restaurants and shops – but the power of sport will inspire our young women to achieve great things both on and off the sporting field.

“Now I call on the whole city to get on board and make sure we maximise the potential of this tremendous sporting event.”
