Lucky 13 for North Mids devolution deal?

The North Midlands devolution bid has taken a step closer after 13 councils agreed to a deal that will see the region take control of its own economy and transport.
The authorities committed to the deal are: Ashfield District Council, Mansfield District Council, Newark and Sherwood District Council, Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, Bolsover District Council, North East Derbyshire District Council, Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, Gedling Borough Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Rushcliffe Borough Council and Broxtowe Borough Council.
The North Midlands devolution bid has suffered a number of setbacks in recent weeks. High Peak has said it wants to to open discussions with the Northern Powerhouse Greater Manchester Authority, whilst Chesterfield Borough Council have decided to throw its lot in with the Sheffield City Region.
South Derbyshire, Amber Valley and Erewash councils simply say they’re not interested in any new deal, whilst Bassetlaw will decide over the coming days.
Scott Knowles, Chief Executive of East Midlands Chamber, said: “Business remains supportive of the principle that decisions which affect local people are best determined at a local level and while consensus is still to be reached about how this might work in our region, we’d like to see a continuation of cooperation and joint activity across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, particularly around the logistical sweet spot which will comprise the airport and the proposed HS2 hub and Strategic Freight Rail Interchange.
“The East Midlands economy is a complex ecosystem of sectors and businesses of all sizes, but it has two key strengths we need to play up to. Here, we make things and we move things, which are enjoyed around the world.
“Regardless of whether the region – or parts of it – comes together under a formal devolution banner or not, there are common issues where collaboration will be key and working in partnership towards the best solution will be critical.
“It’s also important to remember that devolution is not just about Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. We have the Sheffield City Region to the north and will also need to collaborate with the West Midlands and the Northern Powerhouse on issues such as HS2, where there is a mutual interest.
“Any absence of devolution for the East Midlands in the current wave of deals will not change the fact that this region holds the key to creating jobs, generating wealth and prosperity, unlocking productivity gains and driving balanced and sustainable growth.”
