Loughborough MP becomes first female chair of Treasury Select Committee

Loughborough Conservative MP Nicky Morgan is set to chair the parliamentary committee which looks into the UK financial services sector.

Morgan, who earlier this week sat on a round table for TheBusinessDesk.com, is the first woman to hold the role of the chair of Treasury Select Committee after a MPs voted in a tight-run contest.

Reacting to the news, Morgan tweeted: “Delighted & honoured to be elected by my fellow MPs as Chair of the House of Commons Select Committee. Lots to do now.”

She replaces Andrew Tyrie, and beat off competition from other MPs whose number included arch Eurosceptic Jacob-Rees Mogg.

Morgan has been critical of the government’s handling of the Brexit negotiations so far, dubbing Theresa May “absolutist”.

At TheBusinessDesk.com’s round table sponsored by Barclays earlier this week, Morgan said: ““It’s very difficult to know what the outcome of the negotiations will be and what new arrangement will be put in place.

“There’s no time for a ‘bonfire of the red tape’ and we won’t have time before we have to leave the EU to put in place much of our own regulation.

“I do feel that the voice of business hasn’t been heard loud enough, and I’d urge any East Midlands business owner, if they feel the same way, to get in touch with their local MP to voice their concerns and ideas.”
