East Midlands Airport set for record summer

East Midlands Airport is on target for its busiest ever summer, according to new figures.

Passenger numbers show a 4% increase in people travelling during May 2017 compared to the same month last year. In May alone over 502,000 people travelled from East Midlands Airport.

The figures show that over 4.7 million people have used the airport over the last 12 months with the airport set to have its busiest ever summer this year.

The airport has experienced 18 months of consecutive growth and is expecting this increase to continue throughout the summer months with over 125,000 additional people already booked to travel. This represents a 4% rise on summer 2016 and will be the airport’s busiest summer on record.

This summer the airport will provide new connections to Budapest and Reus with Ryanair, Split and Almeria with Jet2.com and Girona and Naples with both Ryanair and Jet2.com. The airport also has a new Starbucks coffee shop and more seating in its most popular restaurants and bars.

MAG, which owns and operates East Midlands Airport, has released figures reporting six consecutive years of growth in EBITDA and 8% EBITDA growth year on year. MAG increased EBITDA to £343.2m and increased passenger numbers 55.9 million, a 7.7% increase on the number carried last year.

Andy Cliffe, managing director East Midlands Airport said: “2017 promises to be our busiest summer on record, with new connections to popular city and holiday destinations as well as 125,000 more people booked on flights compared to last year. As we grow and offer more destinations to our customers and the businesses that call our region home we will ensure that we maintain our high levels of customer service.

“We have invested in new security lanes to help make sure that queues are kept to a minimum even during our busiest times, employed more staff to provide customers with information and help as they pass through the airport and refurbished our bars, restaurants and shops.”
