German life sciences firm I&L Biosystems is set to open its UK headquarters in Leicester.

Founded in 1991, I&L Biosystems Group employs 55 people in life science distribution across Europe, specialising in laboratory equipment in microbiology, cell biology, biotechnology and process control and has its HQ in Germany.

The company says it has been seeking a base for its UK operations for some time and have chosen Leicester, citing its central location, transport links and access to highly skilled staff as the reason behind its choice.

“We are focused on creating long-term partnerships with established suppliers across the globe,” said Jay Champaneri, director for I&L Biosystems UK, who will now be based at Pear Tree Business Park, Ratby.

He added: “To do that and to attract the talented employees we need to match our growth ambitions, we need a good central location and great access to our customers, suppliers and partners. I know Leicestershire very well and made the case to our team back in Germany with advice from our lawyers, Pattersons Commercial Law.

“We will shortly be embarking on a recruitment drive, looking for product specialists and applications scientists in the areas of Cell Biology and Protein Biochemistry, seeking to create four new jobs to start with.

“I look forward to establishing connections across the UK and Ireland, but especially here in the East Midlands which has a wealth of life sciences businesses and a growing reputation internationally. We’re open for business and we’re here to help them.”

Rik Pancholi of Pattersons Commercial Law advised on the deal to bring the company to Leicester.

He said: “This is a business that is built on good connections and strong relationships and it is fantastic to be bringing them to the city at this exciting phase in their growth. They are only a small team at the moment but they are growing rapidly and will soon be playing a big part in the region’s economy as they tap into the many networks we have here. I wish them all the best with their plans and I am delighted they have chosen to start them here in Leicester.”
