130 jobs at risk as HMRC announces Derby office closure

Over 130 jobs at HMRC in Derby are at risk after it was announced its office in the city is set to close.

HMRC will close its Northgate House offices on Agard Street in 2019, according to the Derby Telegraph, with staff offered a move to Nottingham.

A spokesman for HMRC said the number of employees that will relocate to Nottingham will “depend on the outcomes of one-to-one conversations” with staff.

He told the Derby Telegraph: “In November 2015, HMRC announced a 10 year transformation programme to create a tax authority fit for the future, by creating 13 new modern regional centres serving every nation and region in the UK, including a centre in Nottingham.

“HMRC wants to keep as many of its staff as possible and expects that 90 per cent of its current workforce will either work in a regional centre or see out their career in an HMRC office.

“While HMRC’s modelling shows the vast majority of its staff will be able to move, all staff will have a one–to-one meeting with their manager about a year before the move to discuss their personal circumstances.

“It will be at this point that a clearer picture will emerge about an individual’s ability to relocate. HMRC will do everything it can to support both its people in relocating to the regional centres and in trying to find alternative solutions for those that can’t.”

The move looks to be part of a HMRC plan to close some of its offices and bring them together into 13 regional hubs.
