Traffic delays likely as Broadmarsh bridges come down

How Collin Street could look after the redevelopment of the Broadmarsh area

The New Year is set to see traffic delays in Nottingham city centre as the redevelopment of the Broadmarsh car park continues.

New work will see the removal of the two footbridges above Collin Street connecting intu Broadmarsh with what remains of the Broadmarsh car park.

The removal of the bridges will mean that Collin Street will be closed on the nights of Friday 5 and Saturday 6 January. One bridge will be taken down each night and lowered into the car park demolition area and disassembled on site. This will allow the rest of the car park’s demolition to be completed early next year.

Collin Street and Maid Marian Way southbound at its junction with Friar Lane, heading towards Collin Street, will be closed on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 January from 8pm, reopening at 8am the following day.

Affected premises including businesses will be open as usual and diversions will be in place around the area in advance of the works.

Nottingham City Council scheduled the work to take place after the festive period to minimise the impact on people visiting the city, but says it apologises for any inconvenience caused. Anyone attending the Nottingham Panthers home game against Manchester Storm on Saturday 6 January is advised to be aware of the diversions, which will be in place at the end of the game.

Councillor Jon Collins, leader of the City Council, said: “The works are a critical part of the Broadmarsh Car Park demolition in advance of the wider regeneration of the area. We avoided this happening over the festive period so people coming to do their Christmas shopping or celebrating aren’t inconvenienced, and timed it overnight to minimise the impact.

“We know people have been visiting to watch the old car park be demolished and are keen to see further progress made, especially now that plans for the new Broadmarsh car park and bus station and the new City Hub have been proposed and presented to the public. We’re looking forward to progress being made on the area’s transformation in 2018.”
