Derby mansion sold for over £600,000

A Derby landmark historic mansion with a secret door and passageway that attracted national interest when it came on the market has been sold by SDL Auctions Graham Penny.

The Homestead in Spondon village is thought to be the oldest of only three houses with Grade I listed status in Derby.

Its secret surprise sparked widespread media interest. The morning sitting room has a hidden door concealed behind the left-hand fireplace alcove, opening into a passageway with private access to the basement wine cellar.

The nine bedroomed property on three floors, set in approximately 1.1 acres, also contains a coach house garage and self-contained four bedroomed annex connected internally to the main house through the side hall.

The Homestead has now been bought by an unnamed investor for an undisclosed sum in excess of £600,000.

Robert Stone, senior valuer at SDL Auctions Graham Penny, said: “This was no ordinary auction lot when it was offered in our Derby auction, and we are delighted to have concluded a sale of such a magnificent property with its fascinating and long history.”
