Mixed-use plans for banqueting hall revealed

How the new scheme could look

Plans to convert a banqueting hall in Derby city centre into a residential scheme have been revealed.

The owners of Queens Hall and adjoining Methodist Church on London Road in Derby have lodged plans with the city council to redevelop the site into 23 apartments.

The application outlines plans to change the site into residential use with retail/commercial use at ground floor level, while keeping the existing dance school.

Queens Hall is formed by two main buildings, what was the original Methodist Hall and a place of worship and the adjacent buildings which served as an annex (Queens Chambers), but includes a very large function hall.

The Queens Chambers buildings are now used as function rooms, with two shops to the front and offices above the shops at first and second floor level. To the main hall behind, there is an office and to the rear is a large room used as a nursery. The former Methodist church is currently in use as a dance studio, although the first floor gallery space is unused.

A planning statement accompanying the application, submitted by Lathams, reads: “The development will not have an adverse impact on the character of the-non designated (and locally listed) heritage assets or the character and appearance of the surrounding assets and Conservation Areas and we see no reason why full planning permission should not be granted.”
