Over 2,000 jobs saved as rival swoops for Thomas Cook shops

Hays Travel is set to purchase all 555 Thomas Cook shops.

The move by the Sunderland-based travel company could save some 2,500 jobs.

Hays is planning to open the shops imminently and will also create a number of new jobs at its headquarters.

Thomas Cook ceased trading with immediate effect last month after talks to save the 178 year old firm collapsed.

The company, which was established in 1841 by Thomas Cook, a cabinet-maker, originally transported temperance supporters by railway between Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Birmingham.
