UK granted Brexit ‘flextension’

The European Union has granted the UK a Brexit “flextension” until 31 January 2020.

European Council president Donald Tusk announced the decision via social media this morning.

He said the agreement is “expected to be formalised through a written procedure” imminently.

The UK has been given the option to leave prior to 31 January if Parliament can agree a deal.

The announcement comes as the UK’s major political parties remain at loggerheads over whether a December election is the best course of action for the country.

Josh Hardie, CBI deputy director-general, said: “Business will be relieved that common sense has prevailed and a damaging no deal exit has been avoided this year. But uncertainty remains high. It is vital – this time – the extra time leads to a deal. All politicians must break the gridlock and let the country move on.

“Then economic evidence must be the guiding light as the UKs future relationship with the EU develops. Firms are keen to see commitments to regulatory alignment, frictionless trade and the UK’s all-important services sector, protecting the UK economy over the longer-term.”
