Controversial plans for retirement scheme get go-ahead

How the scheme will look

Controversial plans to build a retirement home in a Nottinghamshire village have been given the go-ahead after developers agreed to a Section 106 agreement.

Churchill Retirement Living will build 43 retirement homes on land at Manor Park in Ruddington, despite objections about the height of the three-storey building, the lack of parking spaces planned and congestion caused during construction that could affect a nearby school.

Churchill will make payments to affordable housing provision in Ruddington as well as towards increased NHS care that the residents of the new scheme might need.

The firm, which has its head office in Hampshire, will build the retirement complex to include flats for sale on brownfield land formerly occupied by the Orchard House care home, which formed part of the South Manor development. These will be one- and two-bedroom apartments and will include communal areas.

A planning statement reads: “The development proposal will create an attractive development of retirement living. The building design respects and enhances the character of the area, privacy and outlook of neighbouring properties will not be unduly harmed.

“The sensitive design, appropriate materials and details and high quality landscaping will further improve the character of the private road and help to enhance the urban fabric of Manor Park Road and the surroundings.”
