Timber merchant moves HQ after 40 years

Derby Timber Supplies' new premises

A Derby-based timber merchant has relocated to new premises after almost 40 years, in a commercial property deal advised on by law firm Nelsons.

The relocation has been more than ten years in the making, as Derby City Council is due to begin redeveloping the area where Derby Timber Supplies Limited was formerly based on John Street, meaning the business has had to locate and lease new premises in Sandown Road.

Mat Pacel, director of Derby Timber Supplies Ltd, said: “Despite being closed for seven weeks during the first lockdown, our sales in 2020 were considerably higher when compared to 2019, meaning we’ve actually been able to increase one of our employees from part-time to full-time.

“While it’s bittersweet to be saying goodbye to our old home, our new premises is just a stone’s throw down the road and we’re very excited to see what 2021 might have in store for us.”

Nelsons acted on behalf of the tenant, Mat Pacel, in an agreement for lease conditional on planning permission for change of use and the grant of a 20-year lease with the new landlord, Rosemary Pepper.

Sarah Burns, associate and commercial property solicitor at Nelsons, said: “While it was ultimately a compulsory purchase order (CPO) that has been the reason for Derby Timber Supplies Ltd’s relocation, it’s something that’s been in the pipeline for years and, as such, has been able to happen amicably and smoothly – even with the additional complications presented by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“At a time like this when many things might feel uncertain, it’s been a pleasure to support Mat and the team to secure this 20-year lease for the company his family started in 1983, ensuring its longevity for years to come.”
