Council u-turn as major mixed-use scheme denied planning

How the scheme will look

Planning chiefs at Broxtowe Borough Council have put the brakes on a major mixed-use development in Beeston – despite recommending the scheme for approval just over a week ago.

Earlier this year Cassidy Group submitted plans to build a 419-bed student block and a number of retail/commercial units on Station Road in Beeston town centre.

The Warwickshire-based developer said the scheme would “breathe new life” into the derelict site and bring increased footfall and economic benefits to local retailers.

Cassidy also said the eight-storey scheme would free up much-needed housing in the town, currently occupied by students, for family homes.

A planning report published last week said that although the building would be the tallest structure in Beeston, the committee considered the site to be “capable of accommodating a building of the height proposed without detriment to the character of the area or neighbour amenity.”

This week, however, the council changed its mind and refused to approve the scheme.

Cassidy says it will appeal the decision.

A spokesperson for Cassidy Group said: “We are naturally disappointed with the decision, having worked closely with the officers at Broxtowe Borough Council. We thank officers for their support and will be submitting an appeal against the planning committee’s decision forthwith.”
