80 jobs saved as law firm sold in pre-pack deal

Law firm Cartwright King has been sold out of administration in a deal that will save 80 jobs.

BDO business restructuring partners, Mark Thornton and Martha Thompson, were appointed as joint administrators of Cartwright King today (December 23).

Cartwright King is a national law firm operating across the UK, employing 80 people. It is one of the UK’s largest provider of Legal Aid services and has 11 offices, including in Birmingham, Derby, Leicester, Northampton and Nottingham.

The joint administrators sold the business in a pre-pack deal immediately following their appointment to AWH Acquisition Corp, which will continue to trade under the Cartwright King name. All employees will transfer and AWH Acquisition Corp will act as a successor practice, serving the existing clients of Cartwright King.

Thornton said: “Unfortunately, difficult trading conditions alongside issues caused by Covid-19 and the continuing court backlogs resulted in cashflow issues for the firm from which it was unable to recover. We are pleased to have secured the business and assets sale of Cartwright King, a business which provides a vital service to the public, ensuring continuity of legal cases for clients and the preservation of employment for all staff. This is also the best outcome for creditors in the circumstances.”
