Plans to redevelop popular city centre pub given green light

Nottingham looks set to lose one of its most popular city centre pubs after plans were to turn it into offices were given the go-ahead by the city council,

The Ned Ludd, on Friar Lane, which has been open for around 18 years, seems certain to close after plans by PKL Investments to turn it into office space to be used by two unnamed businesses in the healthcare sector have been given the green light.

A planning statement said: “The proposals represent a positive re-use of an existing building that would not be detrimental to the amenities or function of existing retail uses.

“It has been demonstrated that there be would no adverse impacts of any significance upon matters of importance in respect of impact on the primary shopping area that might
otherwise outweigh the significant benefits that would arise, in particular maintaining and enhancing the vitality and vibrancy of the city centre.

“For the reasons set out, the overall planning balance weighs in favour of the application and should be supported by the local planning authority and therefore we request that planning permission is granted without delay.”

The Ned Ludd is a favourite with office workers and locals.

Such was the strong feeling behind the new proposals by the landlord, that an online petition was launched aimed at trying to save it from redevelopment. The petition attracted 628 signatories.

It says: “For many of us in Nottingham, this family-run pub is more than just a place to grab a pint. It’s our local hub, our community centre, and an integral part of our city’s unique charm. This pub has been in the same family for many years and has become a beloved institution in Nottingham city centre.

“This isn’t just about preserving a business; it’s about preserving our community spirit. The pub hosts popular quiz nights and warmly welcomes all pets, making it not only pet-friendly but also people-friendly! Its closure would mean losing one of the very few unique places left in Nottingham city centre.”
