Supermarket war takes another twist as fresh planning application submitted

The battle for supermarket supremacy in a Lincolnshire town has taken another twist.

Aldi has said that it “remains committed” to following through on plans for a £7m store, EV charging hub and 24-hour petrol station on Spilsby Road in Horncastle, despite attempts by fierce rival Lidl.

Originally granted approval in 2022, with over 290 letters of support, the proposal faced a setback in July when planning permission was revoked following a Judicial Review initiated by Lidl – which also wanted to build a store on Spilsby Road.

Aldi’s plans will sit alongside an associated outline proposal. This will be delivered by another applicant and would include a 24-hour petrol filling station, Rapid Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points, tourist rest and welcome facilities, WC amenities and a Tourist Information Hub promoting the Lincolnshire Wolds and coastline.

Mark Stringer, real estate director for Aldi, said: “We believe our plan is the right one for Horncastle, bringing unbeatable value, well-paid jobs, and new facilities for the local community. This proposal encompasses so much more than just a supermarket; it introduces the town’s first 24-hour petrol station, rapid charging points, and a tourist information point.

“Our development is offered in tandem with the existing Laurels Service Station, which is highly valued by the local community.”

The owner of Laurels Service Station, Guy White, added: “The proposed Aldi development represents a crucial opportunity for growth not only for my business but for the entire Horncastle community. The addition of a 24-hour petrol station, rapid EV charging points, and planned tourist facilities will meet the evolving needs of our residents and visitor economy while preserving the valued services we provide.

“I am excited about the potential this project has to enhance our local economy and support our community.”
