New images reveal glimpse of new city centre square
New images have been released of how a major new Derby city centre square will look.
Artist impressions of of Osnabruck Square are part of an effort to transform the city centre as part of the Market Hall project.
The revitalised Osnabruck Square will feature a green area, including new raised planting beds, trees and shrubs.
The square will also feature flexible event spaces, outdoor café seating, and artistic installations. There will also be additional amenities which include free-standing benches, improved accessibility with re-aligned crossings and Blue Badge parking.
Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council and Cabinet Member for City Centre, Regeneration, Strategy and Policy, said: “Through collaborative working with the contractor and robust budget management, we have created an attractive design for Osnabruck Square that can be successfully delivered within the capital budget.
“I am delighted that these plans for Osnabruck Square are now moving ahead as part of the transformation of our iconic Market Hall, and I am proud to lead the Council at a time where we are making a conscious effort to develop a vibrant, better-connected, and greener Derby.
“The design will breathe new life into this area and will draw people into the Market Hall from key parts of the city centre. The Market Hall and its surrounding areas, including Osnabruck Square, will become a hub for shopping, eating, and entertainment and we are creating spaces where families can gather, and local businesses can thrive. We are all looking forward to seeing the completion of these developments.2
The Market Hall redevelopment is a £31.5m project part funded with £9.43m from the Government’s Future High Street Fund (FHSF). It is in the second phase of the transformation, focusing on refurbishing the interior and developing the public space outside at Osnabruck Square.
The new Market Hall will generate £3.64m for the local economy every year, says the council.
Businesses throughout the region are being invited to register their interest in operating from the refurbished Market Hall, which will reopen in the Spring.
