On the move: the latest East Midlands hires

Law firm Michael Cummins Employment Solicitors has welcomed Sally Smojkis to its support team.
Smojkis joins the now eight-strong firm as a vastly experienced legal assistant who has worked across employment law and commercial litigation.
With a track record of more than 25 years working for several widely respected Midlands law firms, She has also previously worked alongside Fabienne McAllister, a partner at Michael Cummins Employment Solicitors.
Smojkis’s previous firms include Lee Crowder (later Cobbetts), EGL and Anthony Collins.
She said: “I have worked with Fabienne at various times and knew it would be lovely to work with her again and with Mike and the rest of the team. Having moved from working at a large law firm I had forgotten how nice it is to be part of a smaller friendly team where everyone is together and works closely in a wonderful working environment.
“The offices are in the most beautiful countryside setting and I am looking forward to being here in the spring and summer.”
Smojkis joins Michael Cummins Employment Solicitors at its new offices at Desford Hall in rural Leicestershire.
Her arrival follows those towards the end of 2024 of Kate Cauldwell-Hunt and Katie Baker-Clifton as new senior associates.
Michael Cummins said: “Sally’s arrival complements those of Kate and Katie as the firm gears up for a busy 12 months ahead in what will be our third year in business. Sally’s skills and experience will be vital in supporting our work and enable us to continue providing the personalised service our growing numbers of clients enjoy and value.”

Over the last few years, I’ve been the Assistant Principal at the SMB College Group, reshaping the curriculum strategy. This has included campus re-alignments, service re-design and developing a curriculum across all funding pathways, including land-based subjects and the trades. I’m looking forward to sharing my expertise to help move the college to outstanding.”
James Thorne is also joining from SMB College Group and is known for his leadership in curriculum, quality, and student experience.
His new role will focus on aligning the college’s curriculum offer to the skills needs of employers and the economy at local, regional and national levels, to enable students and apprentices to gain the knowledge and skills required for the future jobs market.
Thorne said: “I’m looking forward to working with colleagues and external stakeholders to ensure Nottingham College continues to provide excellent opportunities for young people in the area, ensuring we are equipping them with the current and future key skills that will enhance their progression, and meet the needs of the regional skill shortages and growth areas.”
Ruth Perry, Nottingham College’s vice principal of improvement and innovation said: “We are thrilled to welcome Jon and James to our leadership team. Their expertise, vision, and passion for education align perfectly with our college’s goals. Together, we are confident they will make a significant impact on our staff, students, and community.”
