Business leader honoured for contribution to University of Nottingham spin-out success

David Whelan has been named an Honorary Fellow of the University of Nottingham in recognition of his contributions to the institution’s spin-out companies over the past 15 years.

With a career spanning four decades, Whelan has supported Nottingham Technology Ventures and played a key role in guiding early-stage businesses like Medical Photonics and The Thinking Pod Innovations.

His expertise in fundraising, governance and commercialisation has helped translate academic research into viable companies.

Honorary Fellowships are awarded to individuals with industrial or entrepreneurial backgrounds who provide significant support to the university.

Whelan said: “I am extremely honoured to be made an Honorary Fellow of the University of Nottingham for my contribution over several years. As someone who spent many years at third level education when I was young, it appears that in the autumn of my career, I have returned to my university roots.

“I would like to thank all those who supported my appointment, especially all at Medical Photonics and Nottingham Technology Ventures. I look forward to being able to help and assist many other Nottingham University spin-outs in the not-to-distant future. I will continue to be an ambassador for The University of Nottingham in promoting all its educational and commercial programmes.”
