Leicester benefiting from ‘ripple effect’, says recruitment boss

Leicester might be suffering a skills shortage, but people have never been in a better place to progress their careers – that’s according to one local careers specialist.
James Taylor, managing director of Macildowie, told TheBusinessDesk.com that East Midlands jobseekers have seen a positive start to the year – in Leicester’s case in professional services.
Taylor said: “In comparison with its East Midlands counterparts, Leicester benefits from the ripple effect from Nottingham and Northampton, cities which are both rich in Blue Chip presence. As such, Leicester has seen a surge in finance roles, more movement in the senior and exec level of the HR market, as well as an increase in procurement positions too – all of which we expect to continue into the summer.”
Turning his attention to the rest of the East Midlands, Taylor said that he is seeing a spike in temporary roles in Derby.
He added: “We have seen a significant spike in job creation in Derby, with a 28 per cent increase on the same period last year, and a continued month-on-month rise in roles since the beginning of the year. Despite the relative size of Derby in comparison with Leicester and Nottingham, the city seems to be faring well this year, particularly regarding the creation of new jobs in accounting and finance, and procurement and supply chain.
“Along with growth in the SME segment of the jobs market, we expect a continued appetite for temporary and interim solutions within the professional staffing sector, with 68 per cent of clients in Derby telling us they anticipate hiring some level of temporary or interim support over the next few months.”
Meanwhile, in Nottingham, Taylor said that as business bosses continue to become more ambitious in their growth plans, candidates with experience in mergers, acquisitions, and systems integration will become more and more in demand over the next few months.
