Business Bytes: Not getting promoted? This is why

There is a few unwritten rules that you can’t break if you’re looking for a promotion at a company. So if you’re guilty of committing any of these office sins, you can forget about moving on wards and upwards.
1. False promises
If you say you’re going to do something, make sure you do. Trying for a promotion whilst proving unreliable and unorganised is more likely to leave you jobless than promoted.
Think about whether its doable before you make empty promises to your employer. Set yourself achievable goals rather than impressive, yet unrealistic targets you can’t meet.
2. Gossip
It can be very difficult to ignore the hottest office gossip, especially when you’re at the center of it all. But engaging in gossip, talking behind colleagues backs or associating yourself with those who do it will massively decrease your chances of being promoted.
Politely decline invitations to comment on others affairs, put your head down and do your job.
3. Biting the hand that feeds
Being cheeky or talking back to your boss certainly won’t have you in their good books and after all they do have your career in the palm of their hands.
Suck up if you have to. Make your boss feel respected and don’t ever correct them. Though colleagues may tease you for it, you’ll be the one laughing when you’re looking down at them from your spacious new office.
4. Complaining
No one likes a negative Nancy so bite your tongue if you’re tempted to complain about anything work related. Bosses will not want to work with you at the top if you’re constantly running your mouth about what’s wrong with the company.
Be positive and professional at all times, even when you think they’re not looking. Employers have eyes and ears throughout the office and colleagues – no matter how well you think you know them – will grass you up.
So if you want that promotion, be reliable, stick to work-related topics, suck up and smile.
