Intu in talks to fill empty Nottingham BHS store

The owner of the Broadmarsh shopping centre has promised that enabling works to redevelop the mall will start this year – and that it is in talks with occupiers of the now empty BHS store.
Intu, which also owns and runs the Victoria Centre mall on the opposite side of Nottingham city centre has promised that it will be revealing who will move into the empty BHS unit “soon”.
The firm, which completed a £42m refurbishment of the Intu Victoria Centre in Nottingham last year, said in February it would start immediately on the wholesale £150m redesign of the Broadmarsh mall in the city.
However, five months on, little, if anything, has changed.
Now, a spokesperson for Intu has told TheBusinessDesk.com that it is enabling works rather than the wholescale development of the mall that will kick-off this year.
The spokesperson said: “Enabling works are scheduled for the end of 2016, but the major works have always been scheduled to begin in 2017.
“The scheme is progressing well, we are into detailed design and are pleased with the progress of our leasing conversations. There’s a good deal of interest in this development.”
When asked what would be happening with the huge BHS store, now shut down, the same spokesperson said: “It’s important to us that we offer our customers the right mix of retailers in the right places and we’re confident in finding a replacement tenant as part of our plans for this store. We’re looking forward to sharing more information soon.”
Intu has said it will deliver the fully redeveloped Broadmarsh by 2018 in conjunction with Nottingham City Council, which owns the freehold to the land.
