Designer label fakes land curfew for handbag trader

An Alfreton trader who admitted selling counterfeit handbags and purses carrying designer labels has been handed a curfew and had 140 items seized.

Sarah Parker, trading as Bling on Alfreton High Street, admitted six charges relating to the sale of counterfeit items when appearing at Derby Magistrates Court on Friday 5 August 2016.

Our trading standards department brought the prosecution after seizing around 140 branded items following complaints.

The six charges related to counterfeit goods being sold as original Michael Kors, UGG, Chanel and Louis Vuitton products − contravening the Trade Marks Act 1994.

Parker, of Abbotts Close, Church Street, Alfreton, had also been selling online via Facebook.

District Judge Jonathan Taaffe handed Parker a six week curfew, meaning she cannot leave her home between the hours of 8pm and 6am.

She was also ordered to pay a £65 victim surcharge, £720 prosecution costs, and to forfeit all of the seized goods.

Councillor Dave Allen, cabinet member for health and communities, said: “This successful prosecution again shows we will not tolerate traders ripping off consumers by selling counterfeit goods.

“The rewards may seem enticing, but it isn’t worth the risk selling goods which are not genuine.

“Fake goods represent poor value for buyers. Their sale also affects the livelihoods of genuine traders who are trying to earn a living and we’ll take action to protect consumers and honest traders.”
