Works begins on two-stage redevelopment in Leicester city centre

North Midland Construction has started work on a £1.6m scheme to create a public space on the site of Leicester’s old indoor market.
The highways division of the Nottinghamshire-based group has been awarded the contract by Leicester City Council.
Geoff Poyzer, managing director of the highways division, described the project as “a great addition” to the group’s public realm schemes.
He added: “We will be doing all that we can to make sure that trading continues as normal for local businesses throughout the works.”
The new square, which will echo recently-completed schemes in Jubilee Square and Cathedral Gardens, is scheduled to be largely complete by the end of the year.
City Mayor Peter Soulsby said “it will change the way people move around our city centre, increasing footfall around Leicester’s historic outdoor market and encouraging further investment in this area”.
