Logged off: Liz Cartwright, Cartwright Communications

Liz Cartwright, managing director of Cartwright Communications, has just marked 10 years in business. But how does she like to relax at the weekends? We found out… just don’t look at her skirting boards.

How do you relax at the weekend?
Spinning and road cycling. I also enjoy baking and cooking and I watch my 16 year old son playing for West Bridgford Foxes – which has its highs and its lows. I also read A LOT.

How many hours do you work at the weekend on average?
I try not to. I do long hours during the week, and I try to keep my weekend for the family… but it’s inevitable that I will put in around four hours every weekend. I tend to do my emails on Sunday night so I’m ready for Monday morning onslaught!

What’s your favourite:
– holiday destination? We went to Vietnam and Cambodia this year which was amazing. But Norfolk is a place we visit every year. Crabbing is one of the best pastimes in the world! I’m lobbying to get it in the Olympic Games. If BMXing is actually a sport, then so is crabbing.

– book? Any bodice ripper. The likes of Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion may have been written a long time ago, but they are not only romantic, but hilarious. For contemporary fiction, I loved Let’s Talk About Kevin. Lionel Shriver is brilliant – but Ann Tyler is perhaps my favourite. And of course local literary hero, and ex-Cartwright Communication employee Mhairi McFarlane’s books are all fantastic.

– album? I have very unsophisticated and varied musical taste, let’s say. I like Public Service Broadcasting – but also Wham! I am in love with Richard Hawley and Grace Jones (who is a genius). I saw Kate Bush last year – which was one of the best evenings of my life. I listen to her CDs a lot – but don’t often get up the high notes in Wuthering Heights like I used to when I was a whipper snapper.

– food? Love tapas. Iberico is my absolute favourite. I like French too – Bistrot Pierre is brilliant.

– TV programme? Cold Feet. The second series is like meeting up with old mates. I also love Poldark and Victoria (more bodice rippers). One of my favourites for a long time is Who Do you Think You Are? I just love the research and the social history. I still can’t get over the one they did on Boris Johnson. For so many reasons.

– website or app? Both. And a few more thrown in for good measure. I love Snapchat – I use it to converse with my teenagers, but now you get all your new channels on it too. It’s brilliant – and a good laugh too.

How do you usually spend Sunday evenings?
We have a roast and then stagger off to watch the telly – Poldark, if I get my way. I then do emails and faff about with the washing and ironing. I prefer the emails to be honest. I am not a domestic goddess and hate housework. My skirting boards are a disgrace.
