PCS designs eco card for Danish retailer

MACCLESFIELD-based Plastic Card Services (PCS) has developed a biodegradable loyalty card for Denmark’s largest retailer, Coop Danmark.

It has produced two million cards, working in partnership with their Danish agent, Logocard, by using biodegradable polymers and new waterless print technology.

A further 50,000 cards have been ordered for Greenland – the first biodegradable card scheme in the Danish sovereign state, said PCS.

The bioPVC material is designed to decompose in less than three years, compared with the conventional 300 to 1,000-year cycle for such plastics.

PCS produces more than 50 million cards a year for household names across the UK including Next, Virgin, Ikea, Ford, Iceland and npower.

Managing director Rob Nicholls said: “We want 50% of our business converted to bio in the next five years and we think this is very do-able. It is an easy, low-cost switch to make, which we believe will appeal to many companies who are interested in investing in sustainable businesses, but don’t want to compromise on quality.”
