Manchester loses out yet again as Michelin Stars are announced

Adam Reid at The French

Manchester is still waiting to land its first Michelin Star in more than four decades.

Hopes were high that Adam Reid at the French – the Midland Hotel’s fine dining venue – would finally land the honour.

The Midland Hotel restaurant was the last venue in the city to hold the coveted award back in 1977.

Last night the latest round of winners was announced and Manchester was once again snubbed.

The restaurant recently named the best in Manchester in the Good Food Guide has just been awarded its fourth AA rosette.

It was recently named the 13th best restaurant in the UK in the Good Food Guide – the highest placing of any restaurant in the city.

The fine dining restaurant landed the award, 18 months after Adam Reid took over from his mentor Simon Rogan.

And many were hoping that the accolade would be followed by a Michelin Star.

But there were other big winners in the region.

Simon Rogan

Simon Rogan’s Rogan & Co in Cumbria won a Michelin Star along with Tom Parker’s White Swan in Fence, Lancashire.

Simon Rogan also kept hold of his two stars at the world famous L’Enclume restaurant in Cumbria. Roganic – his new venture in London was also awarded a star.

He said: “Thank you Michelin Guide for awarding four stars across my restaurants today.

“I’m so proud of the team at Rogan and Co – another first star – Head Chef Tom Barnes, it’s great to have you back and Daniella, thank you for all your hard work over the years.

“Last but not least my team at L’Enclume – where it all began. You all work so incredibly hard and push the boundaries every single day. Thank you for continuing to make our first Cartmel restaurant such a special place.”

Mark Birchall’s Moor Hall, in Lancashire was awarded two stars.

He said: he said: “Without sounding arrogant I know what we do every day, I knew what we did from the start.

“And yes I’m surprised, I didn’t expect this – I don’t think you expect anything in life – but we’ve got an amazing team, business partners, families, everything.

“We serve our guests, our guests love what we do and that spurs us on, it really does.”

The Midland Hotel was the last restaurant in Manchester to be awarded a Michelin star, which it held from 1974 to 1977.

Rebecca Burr, director of the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland, said this year’s results were indicative of the “ever-evolving culinary scene” across the country.

She said: “This is such an exciting year for us. We have a new venue and a theme that will give guests a unique experience.

“On top of that, the selection is set to be very strong this year – a real endorsement of the ever-evolving culinary scene of Great Britain and Ireland.”
