Brakes signs up to Omega Warrington

HUNDREDS of new jobs have been promised in Warrington after food distributor Brakes was confirmed as the first occupier of the Omega scheme in Warrington.

It has agreed a pre-let on a 200,000 sq ft warehouse at the scheme, a joint venture between Miller Developments and Royal Bank of Scotland-owned KUC Properties.

The letting accounts for around a quarter of the park’s 80 acres on the northern side of the M62. In total the site covers 575 acres.

Brakes plans to use the warehouse as a “state of the art multi-temperature food service distribution centre”. Its construction will be funded by the Northern Ireland Local Government Offices’ Superannuation Committee (NILGOSC).

Nick Smart, Brakes’ supply chain director, said: “The decision to build this new site in Warrington fits with our long-term strategy to meet our growth projections by investing in our network, ensuring that we are in a healthy position to meet growing demand in the North West and continuing to provide our customers with the market-leading levels of service they have come to expect from Brakes.”

The Homes and Communities Agency, which owns the land, invested £32m in the new junction 8 of the M62 and associated carriage works in 2002 and has been working closely with Omega Warrington, the Warrington Council and the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnerships to unlock the scheme.

North West director Deborah McLaughlin said: “It’s fantastic that through successful partnership working, we’ve signed up Omega North’s first major occupier.

“Local people will benefit from a significant number of new jobs and that’s good news for us all. We know that there is strong demand for commercial space at Omega; the site is highly attractive and well located and we are delighted by the level of interest so far that should translate into even more employment opportunities, supporting the economic growth of Warrington.”

Omega Warrington was advised by Robert Dunston, senior director at GVA. He said: “This is a significant deal for Warrington and the North West industrial property market. The 200,000 sq ft pre-let to Brakes will unlock the development of Omega North and what will become a thriving hub of industrial activity for the region.”
