The Interview – Mark Gallimore

TheBusinessDesk.com speaks to Mark Gallimore, managing director of building management business The Livingcity Group.

If you could improve anything in the region, what would it be?

Like most people, I’d cite transport infrastructure as a key thing. The debate around HS2 is really interesting and I can see the arguments both for and against but making the North West as accessible as possible is vital for long-term economic growth. It’s also really encouraging that the next phase in the expansion of Manchester’s Metrolink has been approved as I think that will only help drive the appeal of the city centre. Away from transport, I’d like to see the main cities in the North West acting more cohesively as a joined up approach would achieve more for the region rather than individual places seeing themselves as separate cities with rivalries.

Looking into your crystal ball, what are your property predictions for the next six months?
I’m heartened by the talents and drive of the people working the North West property sector along with an upturn in development so I think the market is looking up. However, I’m still worried about funding and that needs to be addressed before a long-term and sustainable recovery can be secured.

What is the best project you’ve been involved in?

I’m very lucky as there have been lots of them over the years. Every project has its own unique set of challenges but there’s always great satisfaction when they’re overcome and the right solution is delivered. As a business, Livingcity has been privileged to be involved in many projects that have run from site acquisition, through to development, occupation and long term stewardship – these are the most rewarding. I also still get a real buzz when good management is designed into building for the benefit of both clients and residents. We work hard to make sure a sense of community is at the heart of what we do to ensure new developments don’t turn into faceless and ‘posh’ ghettos.

Name the person who has most inspired you and the one who has had the biggest influence on your career?
It might sound a bit clichéd but the people I work with on a day to day are my biggest influencers; from our own staff to our clients, residents, professional advisors and contemporaries. Each one shapes how I do business and also drives the culture of our organisation.

Is there any building or project from any time that you wish you could have worked on?

I’m not really one for ‘what-ifs’ so that is a tough one to answer. I do have a passion for period buildings and I always say that people should look up more in Manchester to appreciate some of the amazing and historic buildings we have here. However, the most iconic building for me is The Chrysler building in NYC so it would be a dream to manage that. You’ve got to think big!

If your career didn’t exist, what would you do?

My dream job would have to be an author but my inspiration would have to been drawn from the experiences and the characters I’ve met whilst working in property so I’m not sure how that one would work! I think there’s a book inside me, almost certainly a satirical comedy!

What’s the best thing about your job?

Working with people who I both admire and am inspired by. Also, making a difference to our clients and adding value to our tenants and occupiers.
