Tesco reveals regional store closures

SUPERMARKET group Tesco has revealed which of its stores in the region are to close as part of its cost cutting drive.

Chester is to lose its Homeplus store, while Express format stores at Heaton Chapel near Stockport and in Kensington, Liverpool will close.

The larger high street Metro format units at Bootle, Morecambe, Ormskirk and Runcorn will also be shut down,

In total the grocery giant is axing 43 stores, accounting for 2,000 jobs.  The Express and Home Plus stores will close on 15 March with the Tesco Metros and Superstores on the list closing on  April 4.

As well as the store closures Tesco has axed a number of proposed new store developments, including a site at Kirkby, Knowsley, which was to have been the anchor of a £200m town centre regeneration scheme.

Tesco’s new boss Dave Lewis announced the restructuring plan earlier this month. The country’s biggest grocer is trying to recover from a disastrous 2014 which saw it sound a succession of profit warnings and reveal a black hole in its accounts.
