Historic Wirral hotel bought by HDK

AN historic Grade II-listed hotel on the Wirral coast is entering a new era after changing hands.

Leasowe Castle Hotel, which overlooks Leasowe Golf Course, has been bought by HDK Leisure after a funding of more than £1m from Barclays.

Built in 1593, the hotel is believed to have been an observation platform for the Wallasey races which took place on the stands in the16th and 17th centuries which are regarded as a forerunner to the Derby races.

In 1826, the castle was used as a hotel – the ceiling of the Star Chamber at the Palace of Westminster was brought to the castle in 1836 along with paneling and other furnishings.

Between 1911 and 1970 it became a railway convalescent home and between 1974 and 1980 it was owned by Wirral Borough Council. It then became a hotel again and was acquired by Lawton hotels in 2000 and is now a popular venue for weddings and other corporate functions.

Bhupendra Gandhi, owner of Middlesex-based HDK Leisure has fulfilled a dream of owning his own hotel.

He said: “There were a number of trade buyers who were keen on purchasing this unique opportunity. As a result, it was imperative that I engaged with a Lender, who would be responsive and execute swiftly, whilst providing support and guidance, throughout the acquisition process.”

Barclays relationship director Anne Collins said: “By working closely and really understanding the business, Barclays has been able to support Bupa financially and professionally throughout this acquisition.

“We are confident he can capitalise on the hotel’s enviable location to attract many new customers to this unique and historic venue.”
