Plans for Jewellery Quarter flats given nod from planners

How the scheme would look

Plans to build 48 flats in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter have been given the thumbs up by planning bosses ahead of a Planning Committee meeting on 7 November.

The proposed scheme would see the apartments built around a Grade II listed building at 33-44 Northwood Street. All the other buildings on the site would be demolished and replaced with a development that would be between three and four storeys tall.

The buildings set to be demolished are currently home to bDG Manufacturing – silversmith. Concerns had been raised that if the business had to move out, then the future of 21 jobs could be compromised. However, the owner of the building says the firm is set to relocate to premises in Wolverhampton and south Birmingham.

A statement from Birmingham City Council’s planning department said: ” The development would provide a suitable layout that retains and refurbishes the listed building and infills the existing gap in the street frontage.

“A good mix of apartment sizes would be provided and the building designs and heights, as now amended, are considered appropriate for the site and wider conservation area.”
