Plans in for major Selly Oak student scheme
Plans for a huge new student accommodation block in Selly Oak have been revealed.
Watkin Jones and Elliot Road Selly Oak Ltd have submitted plans to demolish units 5-8 on Elliot Road, Selly Oak and build a scheme that would house 526 students. The current buildings house NHS records and a gym.
The new plans could add to the 2,500 student bed places Watkin Jones has built in Birmingham, including those at the Old Fire Station at Lancaster Circus and Bagot Street.
A statement accompanying the plans from architect HLM reads: “The development aims to create a strong ‘sense of place’ in a new residential hub, while respecting the variety of Selly Oak’s architectural character. The scheme looks to draw inspiration from Selly Oak’s history and draws cues from its contextual building forms and materials.”
