37-floor ‘super slender’ tower gets thumbs up from city planners

Plans to build a ‘super slender’ 37-floor tower in Birmingham city centre have been recommended for approval by City Council planning bosses.

Birmingham-based developer Taylor Grange Developments lodged proposals last July for a £58m block of 264 serviced apartments on land at 211 Broad Street, next door to Moda Living’s 42-storey residential tower The Mercian.

Designed by Glancy Nicholls Architects, the tower would be a ‘super slender’ building accounting for its proximity to other buildings.

A planning statement said: “The proposals have been carefully designed taking full account of the existing and emerging built context in order to provide an appropriate response.”

The existing Transport General Workers Union Building will be demolished to make way for the tower.

Amenities at lower levels will include dining/café/ restaurant, a bar, resident’s lounge, gymnasium and storage spaces but there will be no parking provision on site.

Birmingham City Council’s Planning Committee sits next Thursday (13 February) to decide on proposals.
