Contracts exchanged on city centre site for £280m high-rise resi scheme

Deal comes soon after developer gets nod for 37-storey ‘super slender’ tower

Not satisfied by securing planning permission last week for the first ‘super slender’ skyscraper in the UK, Birmingham’s Taylor Grange has now announced plans for a £280m mixed-use residential scheme in the city.

The developer says it has exchanged contracts to buy a site on Broad Street in Birmingham on which it plans to construct a high-rise residential scheme.

A 250-year lease for The Square from Freshwater Group and the Schools of King Edward VI will be acquired by Taylor Grange for more than £15m.

The company is looking to develop a scheme of flats and an apart-hotel on a 1.7-acre site. Two blocks, including a skyscraper, will contain around 600 apartments, with a third for 150 serviced apartments.

Taylor Grange has had pre-application discussions with Birmingham City Council on the proposals.

Broad Street is being transformed, with the office-led schemes at Paradise and Arena Central being matched by large residential schemes including The Bank towers, Crest Nicholson’s scheme at Sherborne Wharf and Moda’s 42-storey The Mercian, with the tram line currently being extended from Centenary Square into Edgbaston.

Taylor Grange also this week secured planning to build a 37-floor tower at 211 Broad Street, next to Moda’s development.

Designed by Glancy Nicholls Architects, the tower will be a ‘super slender’ building accounting for its proximity to other buildings. The existing Transport General Workers Union Building will be demolished to make way for the tower.

The £58m skyscraper will be 116.5m tall and just 9.5m wide and will also offer a range of amenities, including a bar, restaurant, gym and residents lounge.
