BHX on track to a sustainable future

Birmingham Airport says its still on course to become a net-zero carbon operation by 2033.

In its second report since BHX launched its five-year sustainability strategy, the airport revealed its cut carbon emissions within its direct control by 27% in 2021/22 against its 2019/20 figures.

The amount of water pumped to foul has decreased by 31% from 2019/20 and reduced water consumption by 10%.

BHX switched to a 100% green tariff for electricity provided throughout the site this year, and managed its energy consumption using submetering to reduce waste.

The Level 3 (Optimisation) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) from Airports Council International (ACI) Europe was achieved too, meaning decarbonising activities are now under ACI Europe’s framework of scrutiny, including comparison with other airports worldwide.

Nick Barton, chief executive of BHX, said: “While we have made some great progress, we are not complacent. There is still a long way to go. We remain focused on delivering our 10-year plan for low-carbon growth and becoming a net zero carbon airport by 2033.”

The Community Trust Fund made awards to 77 local projects, with grants totalling £193,787 over 2021/22 and 2022/23 and taking our cumulative awards to £1.88m.

A partnership with Solihull Mind has developed, with fundraising involving a Midnight Runway Run, where staff, friends and families took the rare opportunity to run the full length of the 3,000 metre runway, raising a total of more than £12,000 in the process.
