The green light has been given for a new brewery museum as part of a major regeneration scheme.

East Staffordshire Borough Council members backed the scheme for the Old Bass House in Burton Upon Trent, which would also include a beer hall.

Approval was given despite the town missing out on a £20m government grant for the project but it is now expected that the council will apply to the Levelling-up fund later this year.

The venue would replace the National Brewery Centre which closed in October as owner Molson Coors wanted the site to be its new headquarters after selling its base on High Street to the council for £5.2m as part of the town centre regeneration plan.

Cllr Mick Fitzpatrick, leader of the Council, said: “These plans for the town centre are truly exciting, I am already impressed with the interest shown by the brewing industry, including a European brewery who would like to send their brewers on tour to Burton.”
