Morrisons to open in former Severn Trent HQ

SUPERMARKET chain Morrisons is to open a new store on the site of Severn Trent’s former HQ in Sheldon near Birmingham Airport.
Stratford-based developer Chase Midland Estates plans to transform the utility company’s former offices, which it vacated last year, into a 107,000 sq ft supermarket on stilts (CGI below).
There will also be 513 parking spaces, five other new retail units fronting onto the A45 Coventry Road, warehousing and landscaping.
Detailed plans have been approved by Birmingham City Council but there is no confirmed date yet for when construction will start.
As part of the project, Chase Midland Estates, which has worked with Edgbaston-based consultancy Brooke Smith Planning on the development, will invest at least £450,000 in the Sheldon district.
Highways improvements will include a filter lane for traffic approaching from the Birmingham Airport direction and a pedestrian subway under the Coventry Road will undergo £200,000 worth of refurbishment work.
Brooke Smith Planning associate director Will Charlton said: “We are very pleased to have finalised the last details of the scheme, which will boost the local economy considerably, bringing jobs and investment.
“It will help to kick-start the regeneration of this part of the city.”
