Digby: "We need a directly elected PM"

DIGBY JONES has labelled the Prime Minister a ‘John Sergeant’ figure in a general election campaign that has turned into a TV reality game show.
Writing in his exclusive column for TheBusinessDesk.com, the former trade minister who was appointed to Gordon Brown’s ‘government of all the talents’ said: “You have Vince Cable in his tutu while Gordon Brown is the John Sergeant figure. The only thing missing is Piers Morgan.”
Lord Jones calls for a major reform of the electoral system, insisting that the Primer Minister should be elected directly in a separate ballot of the whole country, and given powers to appoint Cabinet ministers from outside Parliament.
He writes: “I want to see a cabinet made up of people who actually know about the sectors they are asked to take on – people who want to do something for the nation and then perhaps go back into the private sector.”
Describing the current breed of MPs as ‘cannon fodder’, he takes a swipe at the Labour Party’s candidate selection process: “Look at Jack Dromey who happens to be married to Harriet Harmen. At the press of a button he is suddenly the Labour candidate in Erdington.”
