Crispmaker adds bite to business with new acquisition

HEREFORDSHIRE-based crisps group Tyrrells has expanded with the acquisition of Midlands snacks business Glennans in an undisclosed deal.

The crispmaker said the deal was in line with its strategy of growing the business and the plan is to increase the sales of the combined group by 50% to more than £100m by the end of the next financial year.

Glennans, which has a manufacturing base in Uttoxeter, is the largest manufacturer of hand cooked vegetable crisps in the UK and Europe.

Following the deal, the business, which was established in 1985 by the Glennan family, will continue to be run by managing director David Glennan.

Tyrrells director Oliver Rudgard said the company now had ambitious plans for Glennans and would be investing in its growth.

Tyrrells has seen its turnover grow significantly during the past year as a result of new distribution deals, overseas expansion and new products.

The acquisition, advised out of Birmingham, suggests strong family-run businesses can still demand a premium.
