UK car production continues to rise

UK car manufacturing rose 0.3% in March, and is up by more than 12% during the first quarter compared with last year, latest figures show.

Almost 135,500 cars were produced last month and in the three months so far, 401,134 vehicles have rolled off UK production lines.

However, the picture is less rosy for commercial vehicle production, which saw a 21.3% fall last month on 2011 levels and a 9.6% fall for the first quarter.
UK engine production fell by 8.7% in March and by 0.5% over the year-to-date.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said: “Car production held firm in March contributing to 12.3% growth during the first quarter of 2012.

“Challenging economic conditions in mainland Europe are a concern, but the sector continues to win business in important and faster growing export markets.

“The prospects for the UK motor industry are extremely good with new investment, commitment and jobs being created by global automotive companies.”
