Open day to offer insight into modern apprentices

YOUNG people, parents and teachers will be given an insight into modern manufacturing methods and apprenticeships when a Birmingham training centre stages an open day.

EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, is opening the doors of its multi-million pound Technology Training Centre in Nexus Way, Aston, on Saturday (February 28) so that people can find out more about the types of training on offer, the range of qualifications and the potential career opportunities from becoming an apprentice.

The free event will give people the opportunity of viewing cutting-edge equipment and techniques used in manufacturing today. There will be a tour of the facilities, taster sessions and Q&A sessions with current apprentices, trainers and employers looking to recruit apprentices.

With manufacturing companies looking for skilled or highly-skilled workers, the EEF said the event was a good opportunity for people to see what apprentices could look forward to if they secure a place within the sector.

The body said that for those who did not wish to go to university, a manufacturing apprenticeship offered a viable and respected route into a well-paid career. At the same time, it can also lead to a university degree, for those wishing to get such a qualification under their belt.

Peter Winebloom, Technical Training Director at EEF, said: “This open day is a great, ‘no strings attached’ way of finding out more about modern-day manufacturing apprenticeships. Whether you are thinking of becoming an apprentice yourself, know a young person who you think it might suit or simply want to update your own knowledge, we look forward to opening our doors and telling you more.

“Manufacturers are crying out for skilled staff so, in partnership with employers, we offer a wealth of training and career pathways for the young women and men we train here at our centre. We hope to open eyes to these opportunities and help many more to realise their future ambitions.”

The open day runs from 10am to 12.30pm.
