Convenience store plan for Birmingham pub

WOLVERHAMPTON pubco Marston’s has submitted plans for the development of a new convenience store in the car park of one its pubs.

The company wants to redevelop western car park of the Plough and Harrow, off Slade Road in Sutton Coldfield to provide the new shop.

The proposals would create 21 jobs.

The existing pub has a large and, so Marston’s say, underused car park with two access points to and from Slade Road, located to the west and east of the building.

The scheme would result in both the pub and the 339m² store sharing the western access from Slade Road.

A similar plan was rejected last year by councillors due to concerns the development was unsuitable for the site and there would be insufficient parking provision.

The revised parking arrangements would see 69 spaces created for customers and staff of both the public house and the proposed store.

These would be split between 16 dedicated spaces for the convenience store and 53 for the public house.

A proposed servicing area has been relocated to the front of the building.  As a consequence of this, two disabled parking bays have been relocated to the side of the building with an additional pedestrian link between bays 3 and 4 to enable loading and unloading.

The existing site accesses will be retained and will also serve as pedestrian access to both the public house and the shop.

A planning and design statement submitted as part of the application to Birmingham City Council says careful consideration has been given to the layout of the development and the design of the building has been amended to ensure the height of the store matches the height of the eaves of the adjacent property.

The proposed external materials have also been amended to feature a red-facing brick with light buff brick banding and brown roof panels.

The opening hours of the store would be: 07:00 – 23:00 daily. Delivery hours would be: 07:00 – 20:00 Monday to Saturday; and 10:00 – 18:00 Sundays and Bank Holidays.
