ROAD and rail users face major disruption getting into work this morning after a serious accident blocked one of the main routes in and out of Birmingham, while a person being hit by a train has also disrupted rail services in and out of the city.

Rail users have been warned of delays of up to an hour between Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International after the incident.

The problems are affecting trains by operators Virgin Trains West Coast Mainline, CrossCountry, Arriva Trains and London Midland. The latest estimate is that services won’t to normal until at least 11am.

On the roads, the A456 Quinton Expressway is closed in both directions between the M5 Junction 3 (Halesowen) and Old Quinton Island on the A458 Hagley Road because of a serious accident.

The road is a main route into Birmingham from the M5 and diversions have been signposted but the extra traffic is causing problems at Junction 2 of the M5, the exit for Oldbury.
