Morgan Sindall completes work on £2m school development

CONSTRUCTION and infrastructure group Morgan Sindall has handed over the latest school it is delivering through the Constructing West Midlands (CWM) framework.
Hamilton School is the ninth the company has delivered in the Birmingham area over the last 12 months as part of a batch worth a combined total of £44.5m.
Located on Hamilton Road, to the north of the city centre, Hamilton School is a special educational needs primary school which has been able to almost double its intake with the construction of a £2m extension.
The new 12,000 sq ft annexe takes the total number of available school places to 110. It provides four new classrooms, a new sensory room, a small group teaching room, toilets and a staff room.
To accommodate the two-storey expansion, the site team demolished part of the rear of the school and installed a glazed corridor, linking the existing building to the new unit. In addition, a new external courtyard was built, and the staff car park and outdoor play area expanded.
Particular consideration had to be given to the close proximity of residential properties and the designers also had to contend with varying levels of terrain.
The company is still on-site with St Joseph’s Primary School, with work due to complete in spring 2017. Morgan Sindall was awarded the work by Birmingham City Council due to its ongoing place on the CWM framework.
The nine completed schools are:
• The Oaks School
• Perry Beeches V
• Cherry Oak School
• Paganel School
• Baskerville School
• Dame Ellen Primary School
• The Pines School
• Rednal Hill School
• Hamilton School
Dave Kelly, CWM framework manager for Morgan Sindall, said: “The challenging economic climate and uncertainty in the construction sector means that the role of frameworks has never been more important.
“We’re proud of the part we have played in establishing the CWM framework as a stand-out example of what can be achieved through efficient and collaborative procurement. This latest batch of successfully delivered schools is testament to the kind of public sector projects Morgan Sindall has built a reputation delivering.”
