Transformation of historic school revealed

NEW images that reveal what a former Grade-two listed school will look like following its £5.5m redevelopment into 38 new homes have been released for the first time today.

Work started on the site on Shipton Street in York, which has stood empty for the last decade, last month.

Developers Rushbond Group and Advent Developments have used York-based architects Fining Associates to design the scheme known as Bootham Green.

Chris Hildreth, spokesperson for the developers, said: “It’s incredible to be able to visualise so clearly what the development will look like when completed. Because we are renovating the old school buildings to create 24 homes and also building 14 new homes alongside, the computer generated images provide an invaluable insight into how the old and new will sit together.”

Mike Fining, of Fining Associates, said: “The new dwellings have been purposely designed to contrast against the backcloth of the conversion of the old Victorian listed school.

“It’s very rewarding to create such a progressive yet sympathetic design that incorporates every modern living requirement whilst still retaining so many of the existing features including double height sash windows and vaulted dormer windows.”

Bootham Green is the first major new homes development to be built within walking distance of York city centre for more than four years.

Esh Build, the delivery arm of Leeds-based Esh Construction, won the contract to build the scheme, which is due for completion in November.

Chris Walker, divisional director of Esh Construction, said: “This is a great
development that will create much needed new homes that are sympathetic to the local area. The homes surround a green that creates an open space for local residents.”
